The original Gundam series in the raw. English subs are almost useless. I know the story is great but can't enjoy it nearly as much do to the bad subs. Not a good buy for someone who needs English dubs or subs. This review is not meant to bash ANIMEniacs, this store rocks my socks.

This is the original Gundam series, and it is not one of my favorites. I had seen the movie version for my first viewing of Gundam, and found it rather boring. I loved watching Gundam Wing, and it is my favorite Gundam series. Well, I was interested in seeing this series after Wing, and the movies were a little bit better, and then I heard Bandai was bringing it to America, but got mad when it was dub only, so I picked up this set. Video 8/10: Really good for its age, I think it may have been remastered. Audio 8/10: The audio is really good as well. Subs 2/10: These subs are horrible. You can get a basic understanding of what they are saying, but you will get a headache if you try to think about every line. If it weren't for the fact you have to have either the english subs or Chinese subs on, I'd say watch it raw. Oh, and episode 10 kept saying Merry X-Mas and Happy New Year in the subs, which had nothing to do with the episode. Another complaint is that eps 23 and 32 are missing the second half. You get the eyecatcher, and then the next episode starts up. As for the series itself, well, after seeing it all, I prefer the movie version because it is just so much quicker in movement, and this series could really use that. If you want to see the series that started the whole Gundam saga, this is it, just heed my warnings. You would be better off just buying the Movie Trilogy Box Set Bandai released 2 years ago and save yourself the grief of missing eps and horrid subs.

As most of us already know, Gundam is the story of the Earth at War with one of it's Rebellous colonies(Side 3 The nation of Jion(Zion,Zeon, which ever spelling you prefer). And that this war is fought with Mobile Suits. Giant robots piloted by the soldiers who fight in this war. I don't want to go into to much story detail because others have covered that part. Anyway this dvd set is almost perfect, except for the fact that the subtitles were translated from the Chinese translation of the Gundam Story. But all you have to do is listen very carefully and you will hear the correct names of the characters, ships, and mobile suits. Even though there are a few spelling errors and some improper english, Don't let this stop you from buying this dvd boxset. It's way cheaper than the "english dubbed only" dvd's. The audio and picture are perfect. Gundam 0079 is truly a classic that withstands the test of time. The anime may be old(1979) but the story is awesome! Enjoy!!

First off, let me say that the subs here are terrible. When you see things like "Boobs are set on Gaoda," you know you're in for trouble. On the other hand, some kind of subs are better than nothing, and if you want the classic original Gundam series subbed (which you should), this is a fine set for the price.

This is the series that started it all! It created a craze that has lasted to this day. The video is great and so is the sound, again, this is 1979 we're talking about. Tomino himself said that the original reels were too badly distorted to create a Japanese track on the US releases of the series. Well he didn't count someone's copies in that statement, because where ever these came from, they are perfect. The only real drawback is the subtitles, names translated from Chinese instead of Japanese, grammatical errors that looks as if they sent the script through babelfish. Again, this is THE ORIGINAL, in addition to Zeta Gundam, I would watch this without subtitles, because it is that good.

I love this series very much because it's the original series of gundam, but the subtitles are completely not readable. please don't invest in this if you don't know how to read the chinese subtitles, because the chinese is not too bad.

Ok, this is the original TV verision of the classic Gundam show. This is where it all started. Subtitle wise, they follow the dialog perfectly. Translation wise, things are lacking. It seems that things went from Japanese to Chinese, then from Chinese to English, yeow! Technically, the translations are correct, but very, very literal. Unfortunately, the names and Gundam are often incorrect in the subtitles, so confusion can insue. Story: Civil war breaks out between the Earth federation and the Space Collonies. Big robots fight on land, sea, air, and space. Human drama unfolds. Great stuff here kids!

For any of you who don't know the story, Mobile Suit Gundam tells the tale of a young man forced into the military. It shows the gritty side of war and was a very revolutionary anime. This is due to the fact that the Gundam actually loses some battles and gets damaged and the protagonist Amuro is far from perfect. It is also the first series in the gigantic Gundam Universe. Okay enough about the story. The sound and video quality are a bit low, due to the fact that it is an older series. The subtitles are generally terrible. As mentioned in other reviews the names are all messed up and some of the sentences are not in the best English. It is understandable though. Regardless of the low quality in the subtitle area this is a great series. Do not let a few name misspellings stop you from purchasing this. It is an amazing series.

I love Mobile Suit Gundam. But, with this release, there is an empty feeling when I am done watching an episode. That empty feeling is the fact that Amuro is named Yabao, Gundam is Gaoda, Sayla is Maxi, Char is Masha, and the list goes on and on. Almost all copyrighted (if they are) names are changed to different names. But, it is still Mobile Suit Gundam, for a nice price. The subtitles, although lacking in quality are still understandable, which is all I ask. I hate the dubs, so would never buy the domestic release because they don't even have subtitles. Also, I don't have the money I would like to buy the domestic releases if I wanted to. So HK is an affordable way to go. Anyways, despite it's few flaws, I still recommend this to any Gundam fan, because hell, it is still Mobile Suit Gundam, with the same great story and great character design.
