I have been a fan of Miyazaki's movies since I was very young, and for a long time knew nothing about them. When a friend suggested this company for my anime shopping needs, I looked into it not expecting much. I was shocked to find such a well-run enterprise, and even more shocked to find this collection for sale. After seeing American releases of My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke and being slightly disappointed by their presentation, it was very good to see their original versions so painstakingly translated and presented in this format. These movies are all very good. True, this could be called the definitive Miyazaki collection, but long-time Ghibli directors Takahashi (Grave of the Fireflies) joins the collection, along with another director I can't place who did Whispers of the Heart, Ocean Waves, and Only Yesterday. With the exception of Only Yesterday(which I found boring) all of these movies have fantastic story, animation, and music. One suggestion I would make is to, after watching the movie, read the manga adaptation of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind by Miyazaki. He did the manga in 1994 (I think), expanding the story to include much more character and plot depth. Bottom Line: $48.00 is too cheap for anyone to pass up on such a perfect collection.

When I purchased this Studio Ghibli Collection I had sky-high expectations of it. Let me tell you, I was not dissappointed whatsoever. The sound is DVD-Quality, the Video is perfect, and the Sibtitles are the best I have ever seen in an HK, and I've purchased and seen numerous sets of HKs. The only reason that I did not give the subtitles a "10" is that such a score can onlyt be attained by official DVD releases with perfect subtitling, and even that is rare. Overall, you are not wasting your money on this set, with 11 movies and a music video (which is STUNNING), you get a deal of about less that $5 per movie. The case I have is magnificent, with high quality images and compact storage. Overall, if you have the means to buy this set and don't, you are a fool for sure. I'm confident it's the best HK on the market.

Very nice boxed set, really I have no complaints as far as video and sound quality, the movies are all excellent - the only problem I've had is that in some of the movies there will occasionally be a line spoken with no subtitle (though as far as I can recall, the only time an important translation is missing is near the beginning of Nausicaa), and that the subtitles in Porco Rosso are /extremely/ slow; I gave up watching the movie when I realised that half the time, subtitles were being displayed for lines that had been said ten to fifteen seconds previously. :/ But the rest of the films are great.

Well, what can I say? It's Ghibli. The films here are incredible. I would recommend all of them. Not to mention the "On Your Mark" music video has made me totally love Chage and Aska now! Sound Quality: Dolby Digital Stereo... good enough for my TV and ears. Video Quality: a few missed frames... the annoying AV logo in the corner of the screen... only Mononoke is 16x9 enhanced... a little pixelization... basically they are all LD rips Subtitles: timing is off on Laputa and Pon Poco, but translations are universally good with few misspellings or poor grammar You know what, this set would suck on a big-screen home theater with big booming DTS and a plasma screen. But for my 30" TV, it's great. The quality of these films is incredible for all ages, and overrides any video/ sound concerns I could possibly imagine having. It's like looking at a color photocopy of a Picasso. Sure, you're not seeing the gorgeous original canvas, but it's a damn Picasso, and you're paying a lot less this way. Personal favorite titles: Laputa, Mononoke, Nausicaa, Grave of the Fireflies (I submitted the translation of the original story of this that is in the special features on this site... read it, it's incredible!), Porco Rosso

Excellent! This box simply contains the at least 5 of the BEST anime movies ever. Laputa, Totoro, Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service. And 6 others. What do you want more than that? The movies are all flawless, and the subtitles are very good for all the movies. At times they are timed a bit too quick, but non a big problem anyway. Besides the 11 movies (eleven!) you have On Your Mark (a music video), and a short flick about a seed that turns into a house. Funny. Buy this now! You are no anime fan nor otaku if you don't love Miyazaki and buy this box.

The other reviews for this are quite good. I just thought I'd add a few more details: One or two of the films have minor subtitle problems. Nothing big, and they don't really detract from the films. Also, most of the films have at least one frame where the video horizontal-hold gets WAY out of wack! Not a big deal, as my friends don't believe me until I show it too them frame-by-frame. Other than that, the only complaint I have left is the FREAKIN MUSIC IN THE MENUS!!! Why is it there?! It has not correlation to any of the soundtracks. It's like a sick crossbreeding between elevator music and Yanni! YE GODS, WHY HAST THOU ABANDONED ME?!?!?! ...Ahem.

Title: Studio Ghibli Collection Publisher: Anime Format: 6 Discs, 12 Movies in Widescreen Synopsis: A collection of anime by master director Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli. The collection includes: Nausicaa Of The Valley Of Wind, Laputa: Castle In The Sky, Grave Of The Fireflies, Whispers Of The Heart, Ocean Waves(AKA I Can Hear The Sea), My Neighbor Totoro, Pom Poko, Kiki's Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso, On Your Mark and Princess Mononoke. This collection was released before Spirited Away was released, so it is obviously not on the collection, and Castle Of Cagliostro was Miyazaki, but not studio ghibli.. Otherwise, this is THE definitive Hayao Miyazaki collection. All the movies are of superb quality, and most of them are suitable for all ages(with the possible exceptions of Princess Mononoke, Pom Poko and Grave Of The Fireflies; Mononoke is kinda violent, Pom Poko has some pretty disturbing testicle humor, and Grave will traumatize any kid, as well as any sensitive adult). But disclaimer aside, this set has something for everybody: romance, comedy, action, adventure, kids movies, more mature features(no nodity at all, or any extreme gore) and even a music video! If I dare say so myself, this is THE best product I have bought on this website, hands down. -Opinion: Get this. Now. -Packaging: 10/10. BEAUTIFUL multi-layered box with mini posters for every feature. It's nice and glossy, too. -Video: 10/10. Flawless video, and in Widescreen, to boot! -Audio: 10/10. If any anime depends on good sound, it's Miyazaki anime, with it's beautiful orchestral soundtracks, and this set delivers with absolutely gorgeous quality. This is something to watch in a home theater system with the sound REALLY LOUD. -Subtitles: 10/10. Perfect subtitles! HALLELUJAH! Every subtitle is expertly written and unobtrusive, and the richness and quality of the story shines through. I even found the Mononoke sub to be superior to the domestic American one! Amazing! -Chapter Breaks: Around four chapter breaks per feature. -Extras: None, just the anime. But who cares? -Menus: Main Menu has you choose which movie you want to see(there's two per disc), afterwards is standard: Play, Chapters and Subtitles. They're in Japanese, but just push Play and choose the subtitles with the remote control. The menus are detailed, colorful, and just plain pretty to look at. -Fun Factor: 10/10. As I said, I find no product in this website as worth the price as this one. Every single anime fan, regardless of tastes or interests, must do him/herself a favor and get this as quick as possible. My absolute most recommended buy.
